In the good old days, the Zuidkwartier was the neighborhood in Ghent where life raged: cinemas, concert halls like the Grand Palais Valentino, plenty of nightlife venues.

With Velvet, Nicolas Verbrugge wants to revive this tradition – a wildly romantic restaurant that looks like a RomCom movie set. Lots of marble, Oriental rugs, the lighting is pleasantly dimmed.

Sometimes jazz bands play, the drinks are top-notch, the dishes original (mackerel with anise, radish and eucalyptus), the desserts a poem – a place where the nights should never end …

Behind a curtain on a stage a Hammond organ and a drum set are waiting to be used
