When Karl Rossell and Tonny Glismand founded the design studio byKATO in Aarhus, Denmark, in 2010, they simply derived the studio name from the first two letters of their first names. The two designers were just as clear about what they wanted to do and wrote the production of contemporary, useful products for everyday life on their banner.
This has remained the case to this day, although they also pursue another goal with their designs: “We want to bridge the gap between commercial industrial design and high-quality craftsmanship by using honest and environmentally friendly materials and paying careful attention to every little detail,” the designers emphasize.
In doing so, Karl Rossell and Tonny Glismand are always on the lookout for originality and authenticity to create products with character and history. They firmly believe “that this is the kind of craftsmanship that requires heart and soul and a genuine passion for design.”
This passion, of course, also inspires design brands. And so today, byKATO’s client list includes such renowned companies as Cane-line, Bolia, Andersen Furniture, Mater Design, KVIK, Promovec, Sketch and HF Christiansen. Regardless of the client, one thing is always the same: Karl Rossell and Tonny Glismand only design products that they themselves would like.
