Hee Welling and Gudmundur Ludvik met at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen. After graduating there with a degree in furniture design, they founded the Welling/Ludvik studio in 2010. And even though they both have deep roots in Scandinavian design and craft traditions, their motto since then has been, “Re-think the basics.”
For this reason, they always strive to look at the design process from different angles. To find the best possible solution, they look at factors such as materials, construction and comfort as well as pricing and the environment. Their designs always respond to current social challenges and also exploit the potential of modern manufacturing methods.
However, advanced materials and production techniques are not an end in themselves for the two designers. Rather, they are concerned with reviving traditional principles of Scandinavian design for today. At the top of their list is always the maxim of leaving out anything superfluous and subordinating every detail to a functional purpose.
Since founding their studio, Hee Welling and Gudmundur Ludvik have collaborated with renowned design brands such as Cane-line, Fredericia, Warm Nordic and Arrmet. The resulting designs are excellent examples of modern Scandinavian design and vividly confirm the designers’ belief: “Good design never loses its ability to be interesting, even when reduced to its simplest form.”
