Just about everyone was there, even longer than planned: Patti Smith, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Jack Kerouac, Robert Mapplethorpe, Tom Waits, Janis Joplin and, and, and … The Hotel Chelsea is a great avant-garde adventure and legend in one.

Now it has been completely overhauled, which is an act of the highest cultural significance. After all, the high stakes here were: just don’t get too close to the spirit of the building, the original spirit!

It can now be said that the three owners, Sean MacPherson, Ira Drukier and Richard Born, who declared this job to be a top priority and carefully supervised and curated all the essential changes, did a good job.

The delicate balance has been struck: rooms, bar and public areas are ready for a new round, but continue to exude art history. Danish furniture, vintage Chinese rugs and old-fashioned bathtubs contribute to this.

Many well-known artists have donated works to the hotel – they can now be found in many parts of the building
