Patricia Urquiola did it again: this time with the interior of Milano’s Hotel Giulia. Once more, the Spaniard shows why the international design scene is so fond of her. She found uncomplicated solutions beyond the formal austerity of many of her male colleagues for this hotel, which belongs to the ‚Room Mate‘ chain.
Urquiola, who moved from Spain to Milano many years ago to learn from the best, is teaching us another lesson with this hotel. Design can also mean to turn shelves looking like they are from a hardware store into closets by adding a rail and beautiful curtain. As a contrast, the lobby floor is covered with the same pink marble as Milano’s Duomo next door. The interaction of shapes, colors, fabrics and patterns can very well be called daredevilish – but this is what makes it feel fresh, open and cozy.
Urquiola’s spirit spreads across 85 rooms and all four categories. The geometric patterns are a reference to the precision of the city as well as its graphic arts, an important element of the local cultural history.
