Patricia Urquiola

She is the Spaniard in Milan. The woman if the male-dominated design world. The easy-going and happy natured person among the stern minimalists. Patricia Urquiola sticks out – and that from the beginning of her career.

She is the Spaniard in Milan. The woman if the male-dominated design world. The easy-going and happy natured person among the stern minimalists. Patricia Urquiola sticks out – and that from the beginning of her career.

After her architecture studies at the Faculdad de Arquitectura de Madrid, the designer, born in 1961 in the Spanish city Oviedo, enrolled at Milan’s Polytechnikum in the 80s. In 1989, she completed her degree under one of the absolute legends of the design world: Achille Castiglioni. But the maestro did not want to let his student go and gave her a position as his and Eugenio Bettinelli’s teaching assistant in Milan and Paris.

In the 90s, she led DePadova’s new studio for product development. Later she worked with Nico Magistretti at top of Lissoni Associati until she finally found her own design studio in 2001.

The chair “Husk” for B&B Italia, the chaise “Antibodi” for Moroso, or the outdoor collection “Re-Trouvé” for EMU are among her most famous designs. She works as art director for companies like Laufen, Molteni & C., Glas Italia and Cassina. Hotels like the Il Sereno Lago di Como or Milan’s Room Mate Giulia carry her unique signature.

Patricia Urquiola’s designs often feature a feminine or emotional twist. She was awarded Designer of the Year or Designer of the Decade several times. In her home country she also enjoys a lot of respect. The former king Juan Carlos I. gave her the medal of honor Isabel la Católica in 2011.
