Located in the very south, the Japanese archipelago of Okinawa is considered as a cultural bridge between Japan and China by connoisseurs of the world region. Above all, however, it is preceded by the reputation of relaxed tropical islands with independent cuisine and a healthy diet – the inhabitants of Okinawa have one of the highest life expectancies in the world.

The interior design firm NAO is now tapping into Okinawa’s special charm and exoticism, which is alluring in subcool Beijing, on a small footprint of just 85 m2. Starting with the project name Hai Hua – which in Chinese means something like “sea blossom” – and ending with the atmospheric yet modern interpretation of the regional architectural heritage of this island world, it succeeds quite well. Red nun tiles – the traditional roofing on Okinawa – frame the bar.

The mural may seem a bit kitschy, but its motif is inviting: men work traditional drums and women dance in front of the sea
