The restaurant on the first floor of the Claraturm at Messeplatz. With its high ceilings and modern, high-quality furnishings including chandeliers, the restaurant has a cosmopolitan flair. The hosts are already established in the Basel scene – their Dio/Mio, which opened three years ago, is a pizzeria.

Equally Italian, Che vuoi, on the other hand, specializes in homemade pasta. Diners can decide whether they prefer the version common in the north – where egg is usually added to the pasta dough – or the one made from durum wheat semolina (dried and without egg), which is more common in the south.

Authenticity is a priority, more so than supposedly pasta-blasphemous extra requests from guests, such as Parmesan cheese with the fish- or seafood-based sauce. “Ever seen a cow swimming in the sea? Exactly,” it says cheekily on the website.

So noble the interior, so surprising a gimmick in the men’s room: A poster with a larger-than-life beer cup is displayed here
