There is not only one famous Hans Christian in Copenhagen. While the Little Mermaid statue commemorates Mr. Andersen’s fairy tales, Hans Christian Hansen built his own monument. In 1963, he created a substation on Bremerholm in the heart of the city, which now houses The Socialist hotel.

Hansen was famous for his refined building fronts. Behind the bronze facade of the Danish Brutalist icon, architect Frantz Longhi has created space for 31 rooms and suites and different restaurant concepts. The rooms, furnished in light tones and with the classic natural materials of Nordic Chic, offer a visual counterbalance to the dark facade as well as the entrance hall with its industrial look – in the latter, even the meter-high dark green doors of the substation have been preserved.

In the bar area, a 3D print chandelier next to the brushed steel counter draws the eye to an impressive twelve meters of room height.

At the time, there were only 20 centimeters between the concrete walls of the substation and the sidewalk in Bremen: enough space for Hansen to realize his legendary facade
