The building, in which the Capital Center Hotel opened, was originally opened in 1959 as the Kings Palace Hotel. Later, it hosted a bank. Hence, the project team found a building that was a conglomerate of rooms and levels around a 27 meter high atrium opened to the sky.
This is exactly were the central piece of art of the hotel was installed, the sculpture named “Mappemonde” created by the renowned Greek artist George Lappas for the Venice Biennale in 1988. The intervention of the designers turned the horizontal orientation of this sculpture into a vertikal installation that now breaks through the roof on the 10th floor in a dramatic manner.
In contrast to that one finds a sophisticated interior design that subtly integrates Greek symbols and patterns. As in ancient Athens, white Dionysos marble dominates in combination with grey marble. Skilled stonemasonry underline the mastery, accents are kept golden.
Warm fabrics, especially in the typical Greek bright blue, enhance the impression. The 177 rooms and suites are cozy and modern, whereby generously used wood as well as marble in the bathrooms and original art work accent the luxury aspect.
Some of the suites are named after famous Greek artists, like soprano singer Maria Callas, actress Melina Mercouri or poet and Nobel Prize winner Odysseas Elytis
