Early in the 20th Century, architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage was commissioned to redesign the South of Amsterdam. The result was a district that is now known as Plan Zuid and marked by Amsterdamse School brick buildings.

This historic heritage was the starting point for Babette van Faassen for the new design of De Kade. Further, she wanted to contrast the traditionally male feeling of coffee shops with a vision of elegant femininity. And created a mix of art-nouveaux influences and contemporary design.

The custom made wall painting was made by Olaf Schouw – those looking closely can discover references to Amsterdam’s cityscape such as the Westertoren church tower and some cannabis leaves in between classic floral elements.

For the color scheme, Babette van Faassen was inspired by mother nature
