Surrounded by the roaring sea, a strange object arises from the water at the most Southern point of the Norwegian coast. Is it a stranded submarine? No, the unusual appearance is Europe’s first under water restaurant.

The “Under” was designed by Snøhetta. It demonstrates impressively the interdisciplinary competence of Oslo’s architecture studio that spans from building and landscape architecture to interior design. A 34 meter long and immersed in water monolithic concrete frame rests on the sea bottom and will grow into an artificial reef that will be totally surrounded by the sea’s flora and fauna with time.

Of course there is also a soft spot under the rough exterior: The ceilings above the stairs are covered with fabric and kept in the colors of a sunset and metaphorically stand for a trip under the sea.

In the restaurant, the warm interior creates a calm and inviting atmosphere. The absolute highlight is the eleven meter wide and almost four meter high panoramic window that gives guests a spectacular view of the fantastic underwater world – almost like through a huge upside down periscope.

Do not forget to eat amongst all these fantastic impressions – as the “Under” offers a special culinary experience with a focus on game and seafood.
