The ArcadiaPlace, Lugu Lake, perched high in China’s Hengduan Mountains, is more than a retreat—it is a meditation on culture, landscape, and design. Reimagined by Yang Lu of Imago Architecture, the hotel flows like a natural extension of the land, its curved main building recalling both the mountains’ contours and the womb, a quiet homage to the Mosuo’s matrilineal traditions.

Raw rammed earth, local stone, and timber mortise-and-tenon joinery root the architecture in centuries-old practice, while floor-to-ceiling glass frames jade waters and sacred peaks beyond. Inside, motifs drawn from Mosuo life—lattice patterns, red-hued hearths, and water lily references—are translated into sculptural light fixtures, custom carpets, and carved wood furniture.

Each of the 46 guestrooms and 14 suites, along with three secluded treehouses, balances the warmth of a grandmother’s house with the intimacy of a maiden’s floral chamber. A rooftop infinity pool blurs sky and lake; restaurants weave modern Chinese fusion into ancestral recipes; the spa glows in deep reds and natural wood. Next door, the Museum of Women’s Art, China’s first devoted to female artists, underscores the spirit of reverence and renewal.

At The ArcadiaPlace, design becomes a vessel for memory, myth, and the timeless rhythm of Lugu Lake.
