In the tiny alpine town of Fürstenau – about 40 kilometer away from Arosa – Schloss Schauenstein has long drawn gastronomes from around the world for the visionary cuisine of Andreas Caminada. In 2025, in honour of the restaurant’s 20th anniversary, the 12th-century castle itself has been quietly transformed.
Caminada entrusted Danish design duo Space Copenhagen to reimagine the interiors, resulting in spaces that feel both timeless and intensely personal.
The approach is deliberately understated: ancient stone walls and timber beams remain intact, but are now paired with oak, wool, linen and stone in muted alpine tones of slate grey, forest green and burnt orange.
Vintage pieces salvaged from the castle sit alongside iconic furniture by B&B Italia and Cassina, as well as bespoke designs created for the project. In the lobby, Studio Oliver Gustav’s sculptural tables and lamps strike a quiet dialogue with the patina of the medieval architecture.
Each guest room tells its own story, balancing medieval heritage with contemporary restraint. Large windows frame views of the valley; bathrooms in honed stone offer deep soaking tubs and rainfall showers; lighting shifts subtly with the hours, creating an atmosphere of soft intimacy.
Throughout, Space Copenhagen’s hand is light but assured—stripping away excess to let materiality, craftsmanship and the castle’s spirit breathe. The result is not a reinvention but a reawakening, where history and hospitality merge seamlessly.
“My wife Sarah and I wanted to create the perfect harmony between tradition and modernity, blending timeless design classics into the fabric of the castle” – Andreas Caminada
