The Oukan is a true treat – a place of calm and mindfulness in Berlin’s otherwise bustling Mitte district.  The culinary concept is a strong contributor: The meals are inspired by Japan’s traditional Buddhist cuisine that is supposed to evoke a feeling of thankfulness, balance and consciousness among guests. However, monk-like austerity cannot be found on the plates. The meals are sophisticated and elaborate – matching the sense of fine dining.

What will delight health-conscious eaters: The meals are exclusively prepared of pure plant based products, building a bridge between century elf Japanese to modern vegan nutrition. White sugar and white flour are not used in preparation.

The rooms are kept in different shades of black, present themselves in a minimalist and clear manner and underline the mindful philosophy of the restaurant. Not surprising as Japanese architect Tadao Andō, known for his strict minimalism, was the most important source of inspiration.  Just as in the places created by Andō, the soul can travel at the Oukan. That is especially true for the small booths for four to six people endowed with Tatami mats as seats and thick cords as separators that radiate a calming atmosphere.

Tip: The tea pairing offered with the menu is just as exciting as the wines and is introduced by a certified tea sommelier with each course
