“Born from nature, walking with nature” is the production concept of China’s largest whiskey distillery, Bacchus, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality as a long-term goal. It’s no surprise, then, that this sustainable philosophy is also reflected in the design of the company’s first flagship whiskey bar in Shanghai.
Chinese interior design studio RooMoo has created a cohesive spatial experience using almost 6,000 pieces of oak from used distillery barrels: barrel pieces adorn the bar’s façade, where they have been placed horizontally to create a lattice-like effect. Inside, guests enter a whiskey tasting area with a green marble bar. Directly above it hangs a dramatic double ring structure, also made from barrel remnants.
Elements of an additional ring structure can be seen on the ceiling, which will be completed as soon as more barrels are used up. The design studio will certainly not have to worry about a shortage of materials.
Next to the main bar is a private VIP tasting room with a custom-made light fixture made of circular metal bands that once held together the barrels of the whiskey distillery.
