Reykjavik

Iceland is adventure. This is the spirit of the 18 rooms and suites of the small and fine ION City Hotel in the capitol Reykjavik. Traditional Icelandic architecture melts with a contemporary urban concept by the Californian architect duo Minarc.

Even though it was thoroughly renovated, the building kept its original charm. An unusual inspiration source was used: a hand-knitted sweater with typical Icelandic patterns by hotel manager Sigurlaug Sverrisdóttir’s mother.

The architects placed aluminum panels with this pattern on the concrete outside walls.  This way, the long Icelandic tradition was reinterpreted – and a true eye-catcher was created.
