Chef Srijith “Sri” Gopinathan pays tribute to his homeland India with his restaurant Copra. Or more precisely: the culinary journey takes us to the south of this multi-ethnic country, on the one hand to the coastal strip of Kerala, the chef’s birthplace. The neighboring state of Tamil Nadu to the east, a stronghold of vegetarianism where Gopinathan grew up, provides further culinary inspiration. Rounded off with flavors from Sri Lanka, the restaurant, which opened in February 2023, now offers what is probably the best South Indian cuisine in San Francisco.
The origins are also reflected in the interior design concept, which was created by restaurateur Ayesha Thapar in collaboration with Schoos Design and Studio Mood. The color palette and design are based on typical elements of southern India: sand tones, terracotta, and neutral white form the basic palette, complemented by lots of plants, wooden and bamboo furniture, ceramics, and baskets made by Indian artisans. The heart of the restaurant is a huge, open space modeled on a greenhouse. There is also a private dining room and a bar where cocktails such as “Jaggery Sour” can be enjoyed.
Pictures by Indian artist Kapil Anant are displayed throughout the restaurant.
