The renowned Danish architecture studio BIG presents a work of a completely different dimension in Swedish Lapland: Biosphere at Treehotel. It consists of 341 rooms. In other words: a 34 m² room that serves as a de facto observatory and 340 birdhouses.
“I was able to spend a few days in Treehotels shortly before the pandemic and experienced a feeling of renewal and complete immersion in nature,” says Bjarke Ingels from BIG Architects. “This gave rise to the idea of inviting not only human visitors, but also the resident bird and bat population,
to live together in a spherical nesting community”.
The unique experience for hotel guests transforms the special qualities of the surrounding forest into the interior.
into the interior. The actual inspiration behind the architectural implementation stems from the ongoing theme of ecology and aims to have a positive impact on the environment. What’s more: falling asleep
and waking up in a nest is also a mentally uplifting feeling!
The design of the lodge was also based on the scientific expertise of Swedish ornithologist Ulf Öhman
