Fredrik Carlström, who was been in Stockholm and later moved to New York, turned Stockholm’s former design college into the creative space Alma in collaboration with architecture studio Tham & Videgård.
Alma – derived from “Alma Mater” – serves as a platform for social interaction and professional collaboration in the creative field. The space features 2,000 square meters that stretch across two building with five floors each.
They are connected by a two story high atrium with glass roof that hosts a restaurant with long joint tables. It also has space for exhibitions and events. Besides Alma the furniture store Austere is also located in the building.
A lamp model originally developed by Tham & Videgård for the project – the hanging lamp w171 nAlma – was taken on by Wästberg for serial production and awarded during Stockholm’s light and furniture fair.
