Scandinavian design meets New York: A fresh northern breeze has stirred the European design scene for a while. For 11 Howard, it swept across the Atlantic and hit the American East Coast. Danish Studio Space Copenhagen gave the 211 rooms of this New York hotel a Nordic touch. Hotelier Aby Rosen’s briefing to Signe Bindsley Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard, the duo of Space Copenhagen: to translate her vision of ‘conscious hospitality’.

“We decided to work with Danish designers because they break with conventions and also give their designs a genuine and personal signature“ says the owner. The result convinces. Scandinavian design principles of highest comfort, clear functionality and authentic materials are reflected in the selection of Danish brands, the lighting as well as the use of wood, warm metal shades, velvet and wool. Bleached oak panels and polished concrete floors stand for the mix of new Nordic and New York.

A custom-made steel circular staircase takes you from the light flooded hall to the second floor and stages Dan Attoe’s neon installation. Art collector Rosen has personally curated the numerous sculptures, paintings and digital art pieces. The collection even spreads across the hotel’s facade. Young artists from the local collective Groundswell painted a giant mural and were supported by Jeff Koons for the project.

The hotel is member of Design Hotels™ and can be booked here www.designhotels.com.
